Blepharoplasty/ Eyelid Surgery in India

Blepharoplasty, also called eyelid surgery is helps to repair droopy eyelids and can also involve removing the excess skin, muscle and fat from the eyelids. With growing age, the eyelids tend to stretch and the muscles which support the eyes start weakening. As a result of this, the excess fat may appear both above and below the eyes, leading to saggy and droopy eyelids. The eyelid surgery aims to improve the appearance of problems in the eyelid and can also help rejuvenate the area surrounding the eyes. This surgery is mostly done for cosmetic concerns but it is also an effective way to enhance the sight of elderly people whose sagging eyelids affect their vision. It can be performed for upper eyelids or lower eyelids or both as per individual preference.

Blepharoplasty in India performed by Dr. Parag Telang will not help one get rid of dark circles, wrinkles, or crow's feet but also provides a more youthful look and more awake eyes. This surgery can be combined with with other procedures like facelift, eyebrow lift, forehead contouring and cheek augmentation to give a complete makeover to the face.

Indications for Blepharoplasty

Any individual having droopy eyelids can consider Blepharoplasty if that disturbs the eyes from opening completely or pulls the lower eyelids down. By removing the excess tissue from the upper eyelids, vision can be improved. Lower lid blepharoplasty is always done just for cosmetic reasons.

To be precise, blepharoplasty is a suitable option for those who have:

  • Loose skin on the upper eyelids or droopy upper eyelids.
  • Sagging upper eyelid skin affects the vision.
  • Bags under the eyes.
  • Telletale signs of aging on the eyelids makes the eyes/ face look tired.

During the consultation, Dr. Parag Telang assesses the eyelids to identify the problem areas, asks the patient about his/ her concerns as well as expectations from the surgery and then accordingly suggests whether only upper eyelid or lower eyelid or both require surgical intervention.

Treatment Options

Lower blepharoplasty

It is a procedure to minimize the extra fat tissue present under the eyes. The sagging skin under the lower eyelid can be tightened by removing the excess skin and for droopy eyelids also, the muscles are tightened. Lower blepharoplasty is combined with other procedures to fill in the hollows present under the eyes.

Upper blepharoplasty

It is a procedure done to correct droopy eyelids. It removes the saggy surface indicating a droopy look and a firm look is created by tightening the muscles. Both lower, as well as upper blepharoplasty, can be done simultaneously with other procedures such as fillers, brow lifts, etc. to improve the facial appearance.

Transconjunctival blepharoplasty

This surgery is perfromed to improve the contour of the lower eyelid. As the name indicates, transconjunctival blepharoplasty involves making incisions in the lower eyelid conjunctiva instead of a subcutaneous incision that is made in traditional blepharoplasty. As there’s no external incision, this is a scarless surgery.

Double Eyelid Suyrgery/ Asian Blepharoplasty

Certain facial characteristics vary as per one’s ethnicity. People of Asian origin usually have monolids meaning there’s no crease in the upper eyelid. This makes the eyes look small that are referred to as ‘hooded eyes’.
As the main purpose is to create a crease or a fold in the upper eyelid, this surgery is also known as double eyefold surgery or eyefold creation surgery.

After eyelid surgery, it usually takes 2-3 months for the eyes to get better. Many individuals feel good enough to resume their work in 10-15 days. Even after two weeks, some bruising around the eyes could still be seen but swelling mostly subsides by this time.

What is the best way to quickly recover from a blepharoplasty?

Applying an ice pack also helps to fasten the recovery process. Most importantly one must follow all the post-op instructions given by the surgeon to ensure smooth and fast recovery.

Does blepharoplasty help in making onelook younger?

Blepharoplasty reverses the clock and helps one restore a youthful appearance by removing extra fat, stretched skin, and muscles above and below the eyes.

At what age, should you get eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty has no age limit and can be successfully performed for anyone looking to improve the appearance of their eyelids. Usually, upper & lower eyelid surgery is opted by older individuals as the process of aging makes their eyelids droopy and causes eyebags to appear. In case of Asian eyefold creation, cosmetic surgeons often advise patients to wait until they are at least 18 years old.
